Unofficial International WordPress Day

Today is Unofficial International WordPress Day, an event sponsored by WPCandy.com that is being used as a way to show appreciation to Automattic. If you are a WordPress lover, the folks over at WPCandy are inviting you to post about WordPress today! (e.g. why you love WordPress, thanking Automattic, etc.) They’ve also prepared a giveaway and all you need to do to participate is publicly express your love for WordPress either by writing a post or leaving a comment on the official page.

Thank you WordPress and thank you Automattic!

I love WordPress because of its open source nature, its online documents, and its community. WordPress’ versatility and capabilities always amaze me. You can learn so much through its online docs and if you want to learn even more, the community is out there to help you. I hope I’ve helped a few people through this blog and I’ve also used to help people over at WPDesigner Forums, which is now dead. :/ Would it be a good idea for me to create support forums here at WPThemesGallery? What do you think?

Dynamic CSS Resizing of Embeded YouTube Videos

Let’s define a “class” called resizevideo with no style.

.resizevideo {}

Add a embed attribute such as below to resize the video’s height.

.resizevideo embed {
height: expression( this.scrollHeight > 186 ? “186px” : “auto” ); /* sets max-height for IE */
max-height: 186px; /* sets max-height value for all standards-compliant browsers */
}

Similarly, set the maximum width.

.resizevideo embed {
max-width: 230px; /* sets max-height value for all standards-compliant browsers */
width: expression(this.width > 230 ? 230: true); /* sets max-width for IE */
}

Note that the height in this example is 186px and width set at 230px, both can be set to the size of your choice; just ensure the width is set with the original aspect ratio in mind, else your video will be out of shape.

Now set the XHTML/PHP in your WordPress theme sidebar to pull content from the video category, in this example the category is “99“, change that to match your sites video category.

  1. <div class=”resizevideo”>
  2. <ul>
  3. <?php
  4. $temp = $wp_query;
  5. $wp_query= null;
  6. $wp_query = new WP_Query();
  7. $wp_query->query(’showposts=1&cat=99‘.’&paged=’.$paged);
  8. ?>
  9. <?php while ($wp_query->have_posts()) : $wp_query->the_post(); ?>
  10. <li><a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark”><?php the_title(); ?></a></li>
  11. <?php the_content(’Read more…’); ?>
  12. <?php endwhile; ?>
  13. <?php $wp_query = null; $wp_query = $temp;?>
  14. </ul>
  15. </div>

That is it, now you can embed a video in your post under the video category (in this example its 99) and it will show as a 230px by 186px thumb. For an live example usage visit Faith Freedom Redesign and look at the video in the right sidebar, click the permalink of the post that appears right above the video and you will see the full-size default embed. Enjoy!

Contemporary Design Inspiration

Design inspiration can come from multiple sources. One of the furniture sets in La Furniture, a contemporary furniture store reminded me of a piece of art in the form of furniture from the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh. With bold primary colors, the whole set could brighten up a dull or plain interior. In terms of a business model, I am not sure how unique pieces like that sell, but I am sure it strikes out to be interesting enough for those who like something unique at affordable prices, and although it may not be the mainstream target audience choice, there are always picky people with good taste. It’s cool and contemporary, and would serve as a trendy design for architectural offices, art galleries, or any other creative spheres.

Contemporary FurnitureOver and above the contemporary furniture, there is a huge collection of modern furniture just a click away. Featuring a huge variety, one of my favorites is the modern Italian furniture designs. Available in such fresh bright colors, it’s a visual delight. A glass and graphite combination, this will offer your space a fresh new feel presenting style and functionality together. Add flair to your home and office interior with this stylish dĂ©cor. The feel of these colors is will instantaneously enliven your surrounds… reminds me of Wolfgang-Bartelme’s WordPress themes, that are such a visual delight. The color, the form and the functionality are all nuanced carefully to make a bold and strong statement.

How to get Cross Browser Compatibility Every Time

Here is a quick summary for those of you who don’t want to read the whole article:
1. Always use strict doctype and standards-compliant HTML/CSS
2. Always use a reset at the start of your css
3. Use opacity:0.99 on text elements to clean up rendering in Safari
4. Never resize images in the CSS or HTML
5. Check font rendering in every browser. Don’t use Lucida
6. Size text as a % in the body, and as em’s throughout
7. All layout divs that are floated should include display:inline and overflow:hidden

Firefox 3.0 & My Addons

Firefox 3 Download Day 2008The final version of Firefox 3.0 has been officially released! Though I obtained it from Mozilla FTP some hours before the official launch, I wasn’t stingy to donate another click to help them set a world record. And please don’t you be!

btw, The “last modified date”, 11-June-2008, hints that the final version is actually RC3.

I’ve been using 3.0 since beta 4. And luckily enough, I’ve been able to get most of the compatible builds of my necessary addons via either the Firefox Addons site or the MozillaZine Forum. Here’s the list of addons I’m currently equipped with:

* Still incompatible with Firefox 3, but tested and worked after manually modifying install.rdf.

Addons I would also like to have: Autohide, Clear And Close, Copy Plain Text, Download With, Favicon Picker, Firebug, Show Image, SwiftTabs, Tab History.

One more thing, if you just hate the newly designed buttons for Firefox 3, you can download this classic theme which brings you back the 2.0 look, but I highly recommend the stunning Phoenity Aura theme.
